Which Lal Kitab Book?
Which Lal Kitab to Refer?
Which one is the original Lal Kitab?
Above questions are raised again and again in our Lal Kitab discussion forum. So I decided to give answer of the question a permanent URL. I'll try to give some definite answer to the best of my knowledge. There are many books by the name of "Lal Kitab" available in the market and it is really difficult for a new student to get the right one.
My answer depends upon what language you can read best. There are five editions of Lal Kitab written during the period of 1939 to 1952 by Pt. Roop Chand Joshi. Details are as follows -
1. Lal Kitab Ke Farman, 1939, 383 pages
2. Lal Kitab Ke Arman, 1940, 280 pages
3. Lal Kitab third part, 1941, 428 pages (Also known as Gutka)
4. Lal Kitab Ke Farman, 1942, 384 pages
5. Lal Kitab, 1952, 1173 pages
First four editions were published by Sharma Girdhari Lal (cousin of Pt. Roop Chand), at Hazi Press, Lahore. Last edition i.e. 1952 edition was published at Narender Press, Delhi.
As you can see the last edition i.e. 1952 edition is the most exhaustive one and sufficient for start learning Lal Kitab. You can get more editions after becoming acquainted with Lal Kitab basics.
Photocopies of original Urdu editions are available in market. If you can read Urdu well, there can be nothing better than that. Go get the photocopies of original Urdu editions. But if you cannot, it becomes more difficult and depends upon which language you can read better.
ENGLISH
1. The best choice in English is available in the form of Lal Kitab translated by Goswami and Vashishta and published by Sagar Publications. It is mostly a translation of 1952 edition with some additions from 1939 edition. It is a well proofread and neatly printed. Right now, it is the best (and probably only) choice available for English readers. Though, in my opinion, the quality of translation is not very good and so this book must be used in conjunction with any other book.
2. Lal Kitab (The Exposition & Background) by Pt. Krishna Ashant. It is not the recommended book by experts. But as not many options are available, it is not a bad idea to take help of this book. Mr. Ashant has left out many important topics without which you will find yourself guessing. Also he has created few of his own hypotheses that may or may not be true.
HINDI
1. There are four Arun Samhits available from Arun Publications, Chandigarh. It is not mentioned which Arun Samhita is translation of which edition of Lal Kitab. Details are as follows -
I. Arun Samhita (Lal Kitab) Jyotish, Rs. 549/-, Translation of 1952 Edition
II. Arun Samhita (Lal Kitab) Hast Rekha Vigyan, Rs. 275/-, Translation of 1941 Edition
III. Arun Samhita (Lal Kitab) Samudrik, Rs. 149/-, Translation of 1939 Edition
IV. Arun Samhita (Lal Kitab) Chaturth Bhag, Rs. 270/- , Translation of 1942 Edition
I found all above four editions useful. In my opinion, 1952 edition (Arun Samhita Jyotish) is more than sufficient to start with. 1952 edition is well translated but not that well proofread. Quality of printing is also not good in comparison to English Translation. But remember beggars are not choosers. It is direct translation (rather transliteration - only change of script) from Urdu, it is quite close to the original Urdu edition. For example, I have seen loss of meaning at some places in English (Goswami and Vashista) translation but you will not find this problem with Arun Samhita. Here you can apply your own mind, if you have basic knowledge of Hindi. Quality of other Arun Samhitas is even worse but again you don’t have many options other than to apply your own common sense.
2. As mention in English section, Hindi version of Lal Kitab (The Exposition & Background) is also available in market by the name of "Lal Kitab (Prishthaboomi aur Vyakhya). As options are available in Hindi, I don't think it is a good book anymore.
Other than above two options, highly priced photocopies of Hindi translations are also being sold in market claiming the 'original translation' in Photostat format. Personally, I was never able to believe whatever written on these photocopy editions due to misprints and errors. Please go for them on your own risk.
These three books are also worth noting -

Best KP Astrology Books
We at our KP System Forum, see this query very often - "What are the best KP System Books" available in market. Due to regularity of this question being raised, I thought to write it here. In my opinion following books are best suited to learn KP System (Krishnamurthi Paddhati) -
1. Six Reades by Sri K.S. Krishnamurthi, the inventor of KP System (more details can be found at 6 readers of KP Astrology
2. Nakshatra Chintamani (3 parts) By Chandrakant Bhat
3. Books by Jyotindra Hasbe (Available in Marathi, the time I read them)
4. Astrology & Athrishta, magazine edited by Sri KSK, (old copied would be available)
5. Astrosecrets & Krishnamurti Padhdhati (3 parts) by M.P. Shanmugham & K. Subramaniam
Other than Sri KSK's KP System, there are some more systems developed on top of KP System e.g. four steps theory and cuspal interchange theory. I discourage any starter of KP System to go through these theories before understanding K P System properly. It can confuse the learner.
I am sure you will be looking for the place in your town where you can purchase the books. I have created a KP Bookshps section in our KP Astrology Community where you can find the KP booksellers around the world.
Fundamental Principles of K P System
Grouping of House
Significators
Placidus Cusp
Some other western Ideas like aspects and progression
Sub
Improtance to Nakshatra
Owner is less powerful than occupant in signifying the hosue matter
K P Ayanamsa
Only Vimshottari Dasa is acceptable
No Yoga acceptable
No Divisisional charts acceptable
Ruling Planets
More mathematical calculations required
Less importance to planets

Vastu & Astrology connection
TheStarOnline has raised the good old question pertaining to relation between astrology and Vastu once again. I was asked this question various times and I too asked this question to various Vastu experts. The TheStarOnline article also supposed to answer the same question but in my opinion - it is not able to answer. This post is based on what I think regarding this astro-vastu connection.
Vastu is more of a fixed science. Vastu is an old science and the modern Vastu dates back to Brihat Samhita of Varahamihira. It means Vastu was there even before Varahamihira who collected different related sciences in his encyclopedia of astrology and related sciences known as Brihat Samhita. Although Brihat Samhita is an astrology centric book, but mentioning Vastu there itself means some relation between both the sciences. Varahamihira doesn't mention any relation between planets and Vastu. So it becomes somewhat difficult question to answer. First mentioning Vastu in an astrology book and then not telling the relation between both.
Although Varahamihira has not mention any strict relation between Vastu and Astrology and you will not find any good book on the same subject yet there is one book that can help us in relating both of them. Being a student of Lal Kitab, I believe that it is the book that can best answer this question. In Lal Kitab we can find here and there, the answer of this question. But the problem is the Vastu in Lal Kitab is altogether different from Vedic Vastu. But I believe that Vastu can be best utilized as a mix of Vastu and Astrology especially Vedic Vastu, Lal Kitab and Vedic Astrology.
Once during development of one Vastu software, I asked the same question to one Vastu expert. In his opinion Astrology is supreme and Vastu is only a supporting science. One cannot expect dramatic results with Vastu alone. If the planetary placements are not good in one's chart, Vastu cannot help him much. He has given me an example of faith and medicine in medical science. According to him, for any disease to cure, there requires faith as well as medicine. A disease cannot be cured without medicine and faith can help us healing it faster. So in his opinion Vastu is faith and Astrology is medicine.

Vedic Astrologers Directory
Today I created databases in Lal Kitab and KP System discussion groups. I think it will prove useful for finding expert astrologers in your locality. If you are either Lal Kitab or KP astrologer, you can get yourself registered in the directory. Here are the links -
Lal Kitab astrologers directory - for Lal Kitab astrologers
KP astrologers directory - for KP System astrologers
Remember that both of these databases are accessible only to group members. So you will have to become group member in order to get yourself registered.

Lal Kitab Aspects
What is difference between 100% and 7th aspect
I had not long written any post for this blog. So I decided to revive this blog with my aspect posting in Lal Kitab group. I hope it will be useful for learners of Lal Kitab. Here is my answer -
Every planet can aspect 7th from it's house. Also there is 100% aspect which is applicable only in case of 1st to 7th house and 4th to 10th house. IMO 100% aspect is given precedence over 7th aspect of planets.
In case of 100% aspect -
1. We will take the result as complete mix of both the planets in aspected house.
2. If the aspecting planet is giving good result in the house occupied, it will give bad results for aspected house. But this good or bad effect will be applicable only to the relative signified by aspected planet.
In case of 7th aspect -
1. It will not be a complete mix but it will be seen as a location shift for aspecting planet.
2. Again the aspecting planet will give the result as it is situated in aspected house for the aspected planet.
More details can be found under the heading of "Graha Drishti" in Lal Kitab. As few examples are already there, I din't find it useful to repeat them here.

What you need to learn Lal Kitab?
When I started learning Lal Kitab, it was not easy. Understanding Lal Kitab is difficult task due to untraditional Urdu language. And moreover it is difficult to know that out of many books, which one is the true Lal Kitab. There was no one to help me.
But now I can say precisely what resources can help you in learning Lal Kitab. You need only two things, one is Lal Kitab and other is Lal Kitab discussion group. If you can understand Urdu, go for Urdu Lal Kitab. Otherwise you can use Arun Samhita (Hindi Translation by Dr. Arun) or English Translation by Goswami et al. In fact, for learning any subject you need to study the theory of the subject and need some practical. Theory or practical alone will not be much useful. Now the Lal Kitab forum can assist learners of Lal Kitab very well. There are many astrologers who have good command over Lal Kitab. I have seen some good discussions are going on. So if you are interested in learning Lal Kitab, join the group and read the achieves.
Here I want to salute the expert Lal Kitab astrologers (we call them Lalkitabists in the forum) who are selflessly helping others in learning this great branch of astrology.

K.P. Astrology Books
Books and Books and Books and ……. So I am writing a lot about books. I have written about books on classical astrology and books on Lal Kitab (at least you have download links now.) I am also planning to write all books available on Lal Kitab subject. Recently there are lots of books on this subject that are not just translation/transliteration.
Anyway, I am often asked about what book one should read to lean KP System. Nowadays there are many books on the subject. KP's own publications brings few new books every year in the market. But I have my own opinion. IMHO one should read only six readers by Sri K.S. Krishnamurti i.e. -
1. Casting the Horoscope (1st reader)
2. Fundamental Principles of Astrology (2nd reader)
3. Predictive Stellar Astrology (3rd reader)
4. Marriage, Married life and children (4th reader)
5. Transit Gocharapala Nirayam (5th reader)
6. Horary Astrology (6th reader)
These books will give you sufficient idea of the system. I am not very sure but probably "Astrology & Ahrishta", the magazine edited by Sri KSK, is also available in hard-bound format. If that is available, you can purchase them. Those are another good way to learn Krishnamurti Padhdhati. Other than Sri KSK's own books, there are not too many good books to learn the system. I remember two other books those are sufficient good. One is "Nakshatra Chintamani" (as far as I remember the name) by Mr. Bhat (again I don't remember the full name of author). This book is available in xerox format only. Other books are three books set by Mr. Jyotindra Hasve. Primarily these books are in Marathi and I am not aware whether Hindi/English edition is available or not. But I guess it would be available. As I told in introduction there are many books and many authors. But these are the books that I like most.
P.S.: I also receive lots of requests for available KP software. I am planning to write in detail about that. Meanwhile you can have a look on KP astrology software of the company promoting this blog.

Monthly Predictions in Hindi
For the last few months I was planning to crate dynamic fonts for Hindi writing. But somehow I was not getting sufficient time. There were lots of things that I wanted to write in Hindi. But the most important thing was my astrology article. I used to write on astrology regularly in various Hindi magazines and I wanted to publish them to net. Finally I got the success. So here is the link -

Book Review: Chandrakala Nadi
Book Name: Chandrakala Nadi
Author: Jagannath Bhasin
Publisher: Ranjan Publications, 16, Ansari Road, Daryaganj, New Delhi - 110 002.
Today I purchased "Chandrakala Nadi", an astrology book based on Nadi branch of Vedic astrology. The book is written by my favorite author Late Sri J. N. Bhasin. Like his other books, it is quite useful reading. The most important feature of this book is, it tries to explain the rationale behind Nadi predictions using classical astrology principles.
As the author mentions in the introduction of the book, there are various Nadi texts like Nandi Nadi, Sukra Nadi, Bhujandar Nadi etc. in south India similar to Bhrigu Samhita, Ravan Samhita and Arun Samhita in north India where native can get full details of his life. Normally you have to give your thumb impression to the Nadi reader and the Nadi reader 'the astrologer' will come-up with your natal chart and other life details like your name and other family members name, profession etc.
Other then that he tries to get answers of some old confusion in our classical texts e.g. which house should be taken for father - 9th or 10th, and which planet should be taken for husband Venus or Jupiter etc.
Anyway an interesting read. The people who like this book will also like "Sapta Rishi Nadi", a similar text by the same author.

Text Book of Scientific Hindu Astrology
Few days back I had written about "Astrology Books and Authors for beginners." There I missed out one very good book. It is "Text Book of Scientific Hindu Astrology" by Prof. P.S. Sastri published by Ranjan Publications, the leading publication of Vaidic astrology books in the world. The major feature of this book is, it encompasses most of the text by our sages. You will find it a complete book for beginners. The perspective of Author is very clear. He tried to stick to the Vedic astrology principles and given example horoscopes whenever required. He didn't hesitate to take ideas of western school of astrology, if he found them useful. But beware that this book requires a lot of patience, as it is an abstract of all Vedic texts. Due to broadness of the subject covered, it will take time to grasp for astrology beginners. Anyway, a must have book for astrology student.

Rectification of Birth Time
Rectification of birth time is difficult but essential part of astrology learning. In India and most part of the world it is difficult to get exact time of childbirth. So the time we get, as an astrologer, is most of the time incorrect.
There are various birth time rectification methods in Vaidic Astrology suggested by our sages. Here is a list of some popular ones -
* Parshara's method of rectification
* Varahamihira's method of rectification (Nashta Jatakam given in Brihat Jatak)
* Kalidasa method of birth time rectification
* Kerala Jyotish Rectification
* Event based rectification
* KP System method of rectification
* Nadi and Bhrigu's method of rectification
* Pre-natal Epoch
Yes, you are right, it is not a complete list of all available methods. Expert astrologers use various techniques to find correct birth time. In all these techniques, I found my own technique, which is quite reliable. First and most important, you have to determine the lagna (ascendant) rising at the birth time. For that I found the feedback method of Lal Kitab is the best method. For every planet is particular house, there are particular indications. You can find those indications (feedback questions) from Lal Kitab.
I once read a book "Grahon Dwara Lagna Evam Akriti Ki Pahchan (in Hindi)" published by "Bihari Pustak Akadami". From this book too you can get some idea of impact of various planet and rising sign on the body of the native. This book is a great asset for an astrology student. This method can also be used for finding the correct lagna.
Once you get the lagna fixed, you can use KP's ruling planets method of rectification to fix the minutes and second of birth.
I don't say that it is the best method. But I can say, atleast, that it worked very well for me.

Win of Pseudo-Science???
OK, Final verdict is there. Now no one can challenge it. Yes, I am talking about Supreme Court's decision on UGC's decision of introducing Vedic astrology courses in Indian universities. Now there is no need to care about pseudo-scientists and what they think about astrology. No need to prove astrology on the parameter of lesser matured sciences. I always used to believe that it is not possible to prove astrology on the parameters or the definition of science. Astrology is much beyond science and science will take some time to modify it and it's parameters to include sciences like astrology in it. A lot has been written over it and I don't want to start another debate on it. I just wanted to congratulate Supreme Court for it's another great decision.

Astrologer's Quick Thought
An average astrologer needs at least one full day to analyze one full horoscope and come up with 10-20 verification points.
What I mean by average astrologer is an astrologer with around 10-20 years of experience and average mental level like me. I wanted to make this point just because people think that astrologers are "trikaal-darshi (can see past, present and future at any time)" that is not true. Don't pay any astrologer hefty of fees for 30 minutes or an hour appointments especially for analyzing and verifying full horoscope. Remedies suggestion as per Lal Kitab and timing event as per KP is possible in that time period.

When any student of astrology starts digging the subject a little deeper, the difficult question arises - which books and authors one should read? You will
find yourself in ocean of books where you have to find perfect match to your aptitude and requirements. There are translation of treatise from various sages, there are commentaries, there are books on various systems of vedic astrology and various other books. Confusion, confusion and more confusion !!!
There are books and authors which can destroy your learning altogether. For
example read Naryan Dutt Shrimali, infamous Indian astrologer, and I can assure you, you will forget whatever you have learnt in the past :-) So choosing right books and authors is very important for your astrology learning. Here I am presenting a list of authors who can help you in learning astrology. I am not presenting a list of books as it will be a big list in itself, there are many good books which suits different aptitude and taste. Here is the list and I tried to rank them according to the utility for the beginner -
I have chosen above authors due to their methodological approach and clear-cut presentation.
There are few other authors that one should not (or never) read. Here is the list -

Reading Horoscope Like a Novel
I am practicing astrology over a decade now. But still it looks that I don't know much about astrology. Astrology is an infinite ocean of wisdom and we play with few drops only. I have experimented a lot with KP system. KP is a wonderful system but it has it's own limitations. The biggest limitation is the lack of research on this branch. Shri K.S. Krishnamurti, the originator of this system, developed few formulae in natal and horary astrology. I have found them around 90% correct, probably more than any branch of astrology. But those are limited. You can time events with amazing accuracy and you can answer certain queries with tremendous precision, but the research is not there on other part. It lots depend on vedic astrology for predicting events. I firmly believe a good astrologer can read a horoscope like a novel. I am far from that and :-( and I have not seen such an astrologer in my life. But take the
example of Bhrigu Samhita and Nadi. You will find nearly everything in the life of native is traced from going through horoscope. Bhrigu Samhita and Nadi are based on nothing but vedic astrology principles. I found that reverse engineering of horoscopes given in Bhrigu Samhita & Nadi is possible with normal level of vedic astrology knowledge. But forward engineering is not as easy. It is the problem with astrology itself. You can justify the past events very well seeing the horoscope but it is not easy to foretell the future events.
I firmly believe that those principles are lying with us here only. Those are nothing special, just we have to understand them. If one can master the principles given in Brihat Parashar Hora Shastra (BPHS in short), we can predict at least few events if not all very accurately. Oh, I am telling nothing great... uhum???? yes, but I think, we have to study BPHS from new angle this time. We can get a lot of things out of this. Hoping to get comments from all learned reader of this website.
Ho Ho Ho, you were expecting some tips from me, and what you got is a suggestion to read BPHS that you were already knowing? But don't worry and stay tuned with this website, it is my introductory post. You will definately see some interesting and informative articles in future.

Lack of Astrological Resources
I tried (in fact, tried very hard) to find some websites on astrology which can help serious student of astrology as well as provide some genuine information related to astrology. But as you might guess - without any success. We all know that the present world is full of hoax information related to vedic astrology. I find it extremely difficult to find genuine and reliable information on this subject on Internet. For example it is difficult to find any website pertaining to KP, Lal Kitab, Jaimini, Mundane, Varshaphal, Ashtakvarga on any other branch of vedic astrology. Forget about the genuine or false information, it is difficult to find information at all. Seeing the unavailability of resources on Internet, few years back, I started few discussion groups on yahoogroups. In those groups, my Lal Kitab and KP Astrology group has especially gained a lot of popularity. These groups are still the only source to understand these braches of astrology on Internet. Seeing the success of my technology blogs, I decided to try this concept with astrology too. I hope this blog will be able to bring genuine information to you.
