Bomb Blasts in India: When is the Next One?

While analyzing Indian Varshpravesh chart for share market yesterday, few more important points came into my mind. One question I had was related to bomb blasts in India and is it going to end? Faizabad, Ahmedabad, Surat, Jaipur, Delhi .. when it is going to end?

To answer this question, let us have a look at the chart. Currently Rahu dasa is running from 14th August to 8th October. Rahu is in 2nd house aspected by Sun from 8th. The 2nd and 7th house are called maraka in astrology, so the placement of Rahu cannot be regarded good. Further Sun is 12th from its own house and conjoined by Ketu making it weak. 8th house is the mortality, death and suicide in Mundane astrology. Placement of Sun and Ketu is also weakening the 8th house. Our sages described Ketu's nature similar to Mars. Mars and Sun both are fiery, violent, and aggresive planets. In my opinion, if malefic and associated with 8th house, this combination signifies the bomb attacks, suicide bombing and terrorist attacks. Famous Mundane astrologers late Shri J. C. Luthara writes in his book "Practical Mundane Astrology" for Ketu in 8th as follows –

"People will be afflicted and large number of them will die through violent crime including murder, dacoity, self-immolation, epidemics of very virulent nature, venomous reptiles, intrigues, deception, assassinations, accidents, sudden mishaps, poisoning, fire, plague etc."

The time this book was written, I believe, terrorism was not that major a problem otherwise we would definitely have found terrorism in the above list. Though seeing the description above, we can easily conclude that terrorist attacks are one of the significations for malefic Ketu in 8th. Fiery Sun is also adding the heat to it.

As we can see above, the planetary positions are not telling us any good story and India has to face terrorism for the whole year till 15th August 2009. Only ray of hope is strong Lagna which gives India courage and resources to fight against terrorism. Also I think placement of 8th lord Moon in Lagna with Jupiter is slightly positive. According to the classical astrology Moon with Jupiter in Lagna constitute Gaja Kesari yoga. We can also see some instant relief as Rahu dasa is ending on 8th October and Jupiter dasa is starting which will end on 26th November. Jupiter is very well placed in the chart and we may see more terrorist arrests in this dasa. Jupiter dasa will not only challenge terrorists but also take them behind the bar.

Will there be more bomb blasts/ terrorist attacks?
As you can see from the above analysis for 2008-2009, it is bound to happen. There are more challenges for India going forward. Ketu and Sun dasa are yet to come and this is the period we should be most cautious. Ketu dasa will be from 15th March 2009 to 05th April 2009. Sun’s dasa will be from 5th June 2009 to 23rd June 2009. This is the period where Indian government and Indians should be most cautious and careful.

Indian Share Market Predictions for October 2008

September 2008 month proved absolutely dooming for Indian Share Market, rather World Share Markets in general. The financial crisis one after another shook the very foundation of the share market. It started with the Lehmen brothers, then Marill Lynch, AIG, Washington Mutual and we don’t know who is the next this Monday. In such a tumultuous situation astrological advice can be very useful. So let me talk about my reading of share market solely from the Indian Share Market perspective.

I am using the Indian independence Tajik Varshpravesh chart for this analysis. The 62nd year for India started on 14th August 2008 at 3:18:58 PM. Here is the annual chart –

Currently as per Mudda Vimshottari Dasa, used in Tajik Varshphal, India is passing through Rahu dasa till 8th October 2008. As we can see that the Rahu is in 2nd aspected by 9th lord Sun from 8th. Sun is with Ketu and hence weak in nature. 2nd house is 12th from 3rd, the house of share market and hence cannot be regarded good for share market. As the planet suggests, we already know that this Dasa has not been proved good till now.

Now as mentioned above, Rahu dasa is going to end on 8th October and Jupiter dasa will start. Jupiter is in his self sign Sagittarius with a friendly planet Moon. Moon, though friendly to Jupiter, being the lord of 8th brings slight negativity to it. Jupiter is 11th from 3rd, the house of share market, is good for the Share Market. So in my opinion, share market will improve in Jupiter’s dasa. Jupiter dasa will end by 26th of November and we will see much better time. In my opinion, it gives an investor buying opportunity as there are many positive signs for share market astrologically. If you are Futures & Options player it is good time to buy ‘Call’ options for October. You must note that as the Jupiter is involved here, the market will be a less volatile during Jupiter’s dasa between 8 October to 26 November.

My best wishes to the investors.

Nadi Dosha & Chart Matching

In Vedic astrology marriage match is done primarily by matching the Nakshatra of a body and a girl. In North India this Nakshatra based match is called Ashtakuta Guna Milap or 36 point match. Following eight (Ashta in Sanskrit) agreements are generally observed -
  1. Varna (for Work compatibility, point allotted - 1)
  2. Vashya (for Dominance compatibility, point allotted - 2)
  3. Tara (for Destiny compatibility, point allotted - 3)
  4. Yoni (for Mentality compatibility, point allotted - 4)
  5. Graha Maitri (for General compatibility, point allotted - 5)
  6. Gana (for Guna-level compatibility, point allotted - 6)
  7. Bhakoota (for Love compatibility, point allotted - 7)
  8. Nadi (for Health compatibility, point allotted - 8)

The above compatibility is based on the Nakshatra occupied by Moon in proposed husband's and wife's chart. This test takes a deeper look at the compatibility between two – psychological, spiritual, physical and sub-conscious level. As you can see from the above table, Nadi has given the most points and hence regarded as the most important factor by astrologers. The Nadi disagreement between two is also called Nadi Dosha and generally regarded as the strict ‘no’ for the marriage.

There are three different Nadis – Adi (start), Madhya (middle) and Antya (end) and they represent "Prakriti" of an individual that is his/her body constitution. As per Ayurveda there are three different Prakritis, vz Kaph, Vaat and Pita and Adi, Madhya and Antya Nadi are equivalent to that only. The exact Nakshatra based classification is as follows –

Antya Nadi

(Kapha)

Madhya Nadi

(Pitta)

Adi Nadi

(Vata)

KritikaBharaniAswini
Rohini MrigasiraArdra
Aslesha PushyaPunarvasu
Magha PoorvaphalguniUttaraphalguni
SwatiChitraHasta
VisakhaAnuradhaJyehsta
Uttarashadha
PoorvashadhaMoola
SravanaDhanshitaSatabisha
RevatiUttarabhadrapadaPoorvabhadrapada

Nadi Dosha exists if proposed husband and wife are having same Nadi. Scientifically speaking having same Prakriti means their offspring will be physically weaker. If Nadis of proposed husband and wife are different it is only then marriage is recommended so they may have physically stronger children.

So how important is Nadi dosha in my opinion? I personally don't give much importance to Nadi Dosha as given by astrologers generally . In my opinion overall analyis of horoscope should be given precedence over than Nadi dosha. For example, 5th house represent the children in a horoscope and Jupiter is putrakaraka. An astrologer should analyze the 5th house and putrakaraka of both the charts and if these are strong, there is no need to worry about Nadi dosha. Nadi dosha is a quick method but I think the detailed and more accurate method (horoscope analysis) should be given more importance.

You can check Nadi dosha in your chart using our free astrology softwae www.AstroSage.com.

Sade Sati in Year 2008

Recently I have written article about Shani Sade Sati. In that article I explained what is Sade Sati, what is Dhaiya, what are the remedies for Sade Sati etc. In this quick article, I want to mention the rashi for which sade sati is running currently. Currently Shani (Saturn) is in Simha rashi (Leo Sign). As mentioned in my previous article, when Saturn is transiting through the 12th, 1st, and 2nd house from the natal (birth) moon, this is termed as Sade-sati.

For the people who have Virgo Moon sign (Kanya Rashi), Saturn will be passing through the 12th from Moon.
For the people who have Leo Moon sign (Simha Rashi), Saturn will be transiting over Moon (1st from Moon).
For the people who have Cancer Moon sign (Karka or Kataka Rashi), Saturn will be passing through the 2nd from Moon.

Hence presently Sade Sati is going on for Virgo, Leo, and Cancer Moon sign.

As the Dhaiya/Adhayia /Panoti is from 4th and 8th from Moon, the people having Taurus Moon sign (Vrishabha Rashi) or Scorpio Moon Sign (Vrishchik Rashi) are under the influence of Dhaiya/Adhayia /Panoti.

Saturn is going to be in Leo for the rest of this year so above will be true for remaining 2008.

Kal-Sarpa Yoga/ Dosha

Kal-sarpa Yoga or Kal-sarpa Dosha is formed when all the planets are between Rahu and Ketu axis in a chart. This is among the most fearsome dosha in astrology similar to Sade-sati and people are scared just by hearing the name of this yoga. 'Kaal' means death and Sarpa means snake and the name itself is good enough to scare people. It is said that the person born under Kaal Sarp Yog passes through death like agonies throughout the life.

I also share the astrologer K.N.Rao's view that the Kal-Sarpa Dosha is one of the biggest frauds in astrology. First of all nobody knows from where this kal-sarpa yoga has originated. No reference can be found in any of the classical texts like Brihat Parashar Hora Shastra, Brihat Jatak, Saravali etc. Secondly and most importantly, I always mentioned that the birth chart should be analysed in totality. Every horoscope has hundreds of good and bad yogas and all these yogas should be synthesized before drawing any conclusion. A single Rajyoga can not make anybody king, similarly a kal-sarpa yoga alone can not create death like situation.

Here is what Dr. B.V. Raman, the most respected Vedic astrologer of the last century, has to say about Kala-sarpa yoga:
"Kala-sarpa Yoga has its bright shades. It [is said to] makes one industrious, hardworking, aware of one's own ability- despite mental restlessness. It raises the natives to top positions in their respective fields provided of course other Raja Yogas are present. Rahu-Ketu axis favors rise in mundane life while Ketu-Rahu axis indicates elevation in spiritual matters. It is also found that Kala-sarpa Yoga natives get betrayed by trusted friends and even relatives. Suffering due to developments in life strengthens the mind and mellows one's outlook. This is a blessing of Kala-sarpa Yoga."

"It occurs to me that undue importance need not be given to Kala-sarpa Yoga. The view held by some astrologers that Kala-sarpa Yoga affects longevity and adversely affects the operation of other yogas favoring a rise in life, achievement, and accomplishment is not tenable. The overall assessment of the horoscope is important. No single yoga, including Kala-sarpa Yoga, is capable of marring or making a horoscope. In our view, Kala-sarpa Yoga plays an important role in mundane astrology [assessment of world events] and is not of much importance in individual charts."

It is what eminent astrologer K.N. Rao has to say about Kal Sarpa Yoga -
Here the astrologer, ever ready with a remedy, is in demand. This astrologer must first create fright in the minds of his clients and it is done most easily by pointing out Kala-sarpa Yoga or even half Kala-sarpa Yoga. Here he promises to perform a yagna at a cost of some thousands of rupees for shantis. This is the prerogative of the Brahmins.

So Kala-sarpa Yoga is a big and newly discovered source of income of Brahmins which is pitiable. Brahmins were meant to be the beacon lights of dharma and spirituality if they themselves reached higher stage of sadhana. But so many of them have become KAAL SARPA YOGIS .

I am sure that all astrology scholoers will agree to Shri K.N.Rao. Just to conclude, I would say that there is dispute about the existence of Kal-sarpa yoga. For the sake of argument if we accpet that there is somethign called "Kal-sarpa Dosha" exists, still there is no need to fear about it as all good and bad yogas should be combined to give any predictions.

Remedies for Kal-sarpa Yoga:

As you can clearly make out from the above that there is no remedy required for Kal-sarpa yoga. The birth chart should be analyzed with all good and bad yoga, balas, aspects, placements etc. and then only any remedy should be prescibed. If an astrologer finds any planet malefic, appropriate remedy for that planet(s) should be performed. There is no need to go to Traymbkeshwar, Nasik or Ujjain to perform the remedy and spend thousands of rupees. Astrologers use Traymbkeshwar, Nasik or Ujjain just to make you spend the maximum amount of money possible and also to justify the fear factor of Kal-sarpa Yoga.

Shani Sade-Sati

There are total 12 signs. Sade Sati is a relative position of your sign where Moon is posited in your birth chart (Moon Sign or Rashi) and the current position of Saturn (Shani). The currently planetary position is called Transit position or Gochar position in astrological terminology. When Saturn is transiting through the 12th, 1st, and 2nd house from the natal (birth) moon, this is termed as Sade-sati. Sate-sati starts when Saturn (Shani) enters the 12th sign from the birth Moon and ends when Saturn leaves 2nd sign from the birth Moon. "Sade-sati" literally means 7 ½ i.e. 'seven and a half'. Saturn stays 2 ½ years on an average in a sign. So, in three signs combined, Saturn stays for 7 ½ and hence it is called sade-sati.

Similarly, when Saturn passes through the 4th house from the birth moon, it is supposed to give negative results. This position of Saturn is called Ardha Sade-sati (Half-Sade-sati) or Dhaiya, Panoti, or Adhayia. Some people consider the transit of Saturn from the 5th house of the natal moon as negative because it affects the quality of one’s judgment. When Saturn passes through the 8th house from the natal moon, it is called Astham Sani (8th Saturn). This 8th house transit is considered equally negative like the Sade-sati transit.

Sade-sati is very much hyped by Vedic astrologers and this period of seven and a half year is said to be very inauspicious. According to some, this is a period with many challenges, some unforgettable. People passing through the period of sade-sati, people may encounter road accidents, fractures, sudden falls from high positions, acute shortage of money, serious health problems and so on. Person passing through sade-sati is prescribed various remedies and parihars like mantra, japa, donation, and havan etc.

There are total 12 signs and as Saturn takes 2 ½ years to pass one sign, Saturn takes total 30 years for pass through all the 12 signs. Out of each 30 years, 7 ½ year are taken by sade-sati. If we include Dhaiya also, out of 30 years 12 ½ years are affected by Sade-sati and Dhaiya. If we also include 5th house and 8th house, we can add another 5 years which means out of each 30 years 17 ½ years are considered inauspicious due to Saturn transit.

There are two reasons for the existence of sade-sati. First, astrologers need some ways by which they can scare people and make money. By associating Sade-sati with Saturn, it is easy to scare poor people and make money in by suggesting gemstones and performing remedies for them. Sade-sati, like Kalsarpa dosha, is a good way for astrologers and pundits to make money. Secondly, astrologers who don’t understand astrology need some ways to explain bad events astrologically. As we have seen above, out of every 30 years, 17 ½ years are classified problematic by astrologers so they can easily blame Saturn for any problem in life. This is nothing but sheer lack of astrological knowledge.

In astrology, the birth chart (Janam kundli) should be studied in totality and an astrologer need to see various points like planet’s rashi position, Nakshatra position, position in various divisional charts, bala, aspects, various dasas etc. before concluding anything. The astrologers who don’t have knowledge of analyzing birth chart in totality depend upon concept like sade-sati and kalsarpa dosha for explaining all negative events.

How to Calculate Sade-Sati?
You need to know your moon sign to knowing your sade sati period. If you don't already know your moon sign, you can use http://www.astrosage.com/ for knowing it. Once you know your Moon sign, go again to astrosage.com and cast the chart for today (by entering today's date and time) and check the sign where Saturn is posited. If the present sign of Saturn is equal to the sign of Moon, previous sign of Moon or next sign of Moon, it means you are passing though the sade sati. For example your Moon sign is Virgo (sign number 6), then if Saturn is in sign number 5 (Leo), 6 (Virgo) or 7 (Libra), you are passing though Sade-sati period.
[Update 2012: You can go to Shani Sade Sati Calculator at AstroSage.com and calculate your shani sade sati for life.]

Remedies for Sade-Sati
OK, what should be the remedies for Sade-Sati? According to me, there is no remedy require for Sade Sati. As mentioned above, Sade-sati is nothing but either a money making tool for an astrologer or result of astrologer's lack of knowledge. There are thousands of examples where a person got fame, fortune and finance during the period of Sade-sati. Indira Gandhi, Jawahar Lal Nehru, and Bill Clinton are much quoted such examples. The objective of this post to make my readers understand sade sati and understand that there is nothing to fear about. If you are facing any problem in life, the birth chart should be analyzed in totality and the remedies should be performed accordingly. Please, please, please don’t get influenced by fraud astrologers and disturb your mental peace & waste your money.

Sun Signs or Moon Signs

Dainik Rashiphal or daily horoscopes are probably the most read items in news papers, magazines, and websites. As a daily forecast reader, you need to know the system behind writing forecasts and then only reading forecasts make any sense. For example, if the forecasts are written for the sun signs, reading it using your moon sign is incorrect. You need to know whether the predictions are written for the sun signs or the moon signs. You also need to know whether the sun sign or the moon sign forecast is calculated for Western zodiac (Western rashi chakra/ Tropical Zodiac) or Hindu zodiac (Hindu rashi chakra / Sidereal Zodiac).

Let me explain. The universe is divided into 12 equal parts and each of this part has been named as a sign. For example, the first part is called Aries sign or Mesha rashi, second part is called Taurus sign or Vrishabaha rashi and so on. Mathematically speaking universe is measure as a circle of 360 degree and by dividing it in 12 equal parts, a sign comes out of 30 degrees each. Sunsign is the sign, where the Sun was posited at the time of birth. Similarly Moon sign is the sign where the Moon was posited during the time of birth.

Though before going into the detail of sunsign and moonsign, I would like to tell the difference between the measurement method of Westerns and Hindus. There is a difference in the way Westerns measure the position of heavenly bodies than the Hindus. The Westerns calculate the position of heavenly bodies from a fixed point whereas Hindus use a variable point. The Western degrees differ from Hindus degree by a factor called Ayanamsa. Ayanamsa is simply a difference in the point of reference. Right now, broadly Western zodiac differs from the Hindu zodiac by 23 degree.

Sun Signs
Coming back to the point of Sun Sign, knowing Sun Sign is easy because sun stays in a sign for almost a month and it is almost same for every year. For Western zodiac, these are the dates currently for Sun staying in various signs –
1. Aries - March 21 - April 20
2. Taurus - April 21 - May 21
3. Gemini - May 22 - June 21
4. Cancer - June 22 - July 22
5. Leo - July 23 -August 23
6. Virgo - August 22 - September 22
7. Libra - September 24 - October 23
8. Scorpio - October 24 - November 22
9. Sagittarius - November 23 - December 21
10. Capricorn - December 22 - January 20
11. Aquarius - January 21 - February 19
12. Pisces - February 20- March 20

For Hindi zodiac, the present dates are as follows –
1. Aries- April 14 - May 15
2. Taurus- May 15 - June 15
3. Gemini- June 15 - July 16
4. Cancer- July 16 - August 17
5. Leo- August 17 - September 17
6. Virgo- September 17 - October 17
7. Libra- October 17 - November 16
8. Scorpio- November 16 - December 16
9. Sagittarius- December 16 - January 14
10. Capricorn- January 14 - February 13
11. Aquarius- February 13 - March 14
12. Pisces- March 14 - April 14

So you must know whether the horoscope/ rashiphal is written for Western Sun Sign or Hindu/ Vedic Sun Sign and only then you can figure out which sign to read.

Generally Hindu/ Vedic astrologers prefer Moon sign whereas as Western astrologers prefer Sun sign for writing horoscopes.

In case the date is lying at the junction point e.g. 14th April, it is advisable to use any astrology software for knowing the sunsign precisely. You can use www.astrosage.com, a free online astrology software for this purpose.

Moon Signs
Coming to the moon sign, there are no fixed dates for Moon for every year for each sign and hence it is difficult to have a reference table the way we have for sunsign. You need to use astrology software for finding your Moonsign. In Hindus there is a tradition to name a child based on the Moonsign at the time of birth of the child. In case the child was named on the moonsign at the time of his birth, you can figure out the moonsign by the name using following table –
1 Mesha (Aries) - chu , che , cho , la , li , lu , le , lo ,a
2. Vrishabh(Taurus) - ee, uu,ae, o , va , vi , vu , ve , vo
3. Mithuna (Gemini)- ka , ki , ha , ku , gha , rh, ch , ke , ko
4. Karka (Cancer)- hu , he , ho , da , di , du , de , do
5. Simha ( Leo) - ma , me , mu , me , tta , tti , ttu , tte
6. Kanya (Virgo) - to , pa , pi , pu , sh , rhn, tha, pe , po
7. Tula ( Libra) - ra , ri , ru , re , ro , ta , ti , tu , te
8. Vrishchik (Scorpio) - na , ni , nu , ne , no, ya , yi , yu
9. Dhanu( Sagittarius)- ye , yo , bh , bhi , bhu , bhe ,dha , pha , rha
10. Makar ( Capricorn)- bho , ja, ji , ju , je, jo , khi, khu, khe,kho,ga , gi
11. Kumbha (Aquarius)- gu, ge , go , saa , si , su , se , so , da
12. Meena (Pisces)- di , du , tha , jha , eeyan , de , do , cha , chi

Let us take an example. My name is Punit. It starts with alphebets ‘pu’ which is found in front of Virgo sign in above table. So as per Hindu astrology, my moon sign should be Virgo provided I was named on my Moon sign. If I was not named using my moon sign, calculating moon sign or rashi using this method is not correct. In case you are not sure whether you are named on your moon sign or not, it is advisable to use any astrology software and check check in which sign the moon was situated at the time of your birth.

Though this is not the end of the all the confusions. There are the times when the horoscopes are written using raising sings also called ascendant or lagna. In Hindu astrology, sometimes rashiphals are also written for Nakshatra (constallations or the 27 divisions of zodiac). Rising signs and nakshatras forecasts are not as popular as sun sigs or moon sings forecasts but you can invariably find them in some magazines. The best way to calculate your raising sign or Nakshatra is by using software like astrosage.com.

Good Time for Chatting and Making Friends

AstroCAMP.com, Days of Penpals have gone and this is the time of Netpals. Now-a-days people use Internet for finding friend, activity partner and date. In fact, Net has become the primary place for finding friends, love and life partner. In such a situation, it is important to know which are the good and bad time? Muhurta Chintamani suggests following muhurta for making friends -

* Pushya, Anuradha, and Purva Phalguni Nakshatra
* 8th and 12th tithi according to Hindu calendar
* Monday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday
* Taitil Karan according to Hindu Calendar
* Venus in Ascedant or aspecting Ascendant

Please note that it is very difficult to get everything mentioned above in a single time. So you need to look for a time which has most of the above mentioned qualities. If you choose the time the way mentioned above, you will not only be successful in making friends but the friends will also be beneficial for you - this is the power of Muhurta.

You can get Hindu calendar calculation from any panchang or from our free astrology software http://www.astrosage.com/.

So when you think of chatting next time, don't forget to check the right muhurta ;-) Who knows that this muhurta has the key of your love and friendship.

A news story by Zoom TV -

What is Vidya Balan’s Date of Birth?

AstroCAMP.com, Today I was reading analysis of Vidya Balan’s birth chart by astrologer Sameer Upadhyay in daily news paper Hindustan. The point that attracted me is the time of birth. Sameer ji mentioned date of birth as 1st January 1978 whereas Wikipedia and Vidya Balan’s official website mention her date of birth as 1st January 1982. Recently the release of Kismat Konnection added fuel to her date controversy and it has gives me a reason to spend some time on birth time rectification/ verification.

After spending a little time, time used by Sameer ji looked more approporate to me and I made slight adjustment by rectifying her birth time as 10:25 PM (10:25:40 PM to be more precise) and able to verify many important events. I used Ruling Planet method in KP System for birth time rectification. From the Vedic astrologers perspective the change in time from 10:35 PM to 10:25 PM will not matter much because it doesn’t change rasi kundli.

Detailed birth chart of Vidya Balan can be found here.

I have found that Moon and Ascendant defines the look of a person. Moon sign lord is Mercury and Moon Nakshatra lord is Sun. Ascendant Sign lord is Sun and Ascendant Nakshatra lord is Venus. In totally Sun, Mercury and Venus will define her look. Sun gives majestic look and it adds ojas to the personality. Venus adds the beauty to it. Overall lagna and moon sign looks OK to me. Strong impact of Mercury in a birth chart makes one starting career early. Vidya started her career in 1995 when she was just seventeen it justifies her Virgo sign and strong impact of Mercury.

2nd sub lord Mercury indicates that she knows a lot of languages especially because it is lord of 2nd as well. Apparently she knows Tamil, Hindi, English, Malayalam, and Bengali.

Though Mars in neecha Rasi and strongly signifying 12th didn’t allow her to get any success in Mars dasa. Mars mahadas delayed her career. Her career kicked off after the dasa of Rahu. Unfortunately for her, Kismat Konnection released during Mars antardasa and this movie failed at box office. It looks like upcoming time is much better for her and we will see more successful movies from her.

As per this time, Venus bhukti under Rahu maha dasa has started from July 2007. How will be this dasa for her? Accordingly to classical astrology Venus is Rajyogakarak by the virtue of Kendra and trikona association. Lagna lord Sun is in 5th house with lord of 10th Venus constituting a powerful Rajyoga. Also generally Venus bhukti under Rahu mahadasa is regarded very good in classical astrology. Though as per KP, Venus is lord of 3rd and 10th in 4th. Due to the absence of 2nd and 11th involvement, I am finding it difficult to predict drastic improvement in her career.

Though there is definitely some positive. I checked the date of release of Lage Raho Munna Bhai and found that Sun was transiting in Venus’s start that time. We know that it was the biggest hit for her in her career. Which shows that if the improvement is not going to be drastic, still it should be significant. Also the impact of Venus will definitely add a lot of glamour to her and we will see more masala and mainstream films rather than films like Parinita. We have already seen this impact in Kismat Connecting where she played more glamorous character than before. Mercury is the lucky planet for her and it is the planet which helped her in giving successful movies like "Lage Raho Munna Bhai". Mercury antardasa will be there from December 2009 to May 2010 and it is the period where I see another blockbuster coming from Vidya. My best wishes to her.

Gandant & Gand Mula Shanti

Getting a birth chart done is the first thing Hindus do after the birth of a baby. The objective of doing it immediately after birth is to check various yogas and dosha in the birth chart and perform any remedies if required. Especially there are certain doshas for which shanti (remedy) is required almost during initial few days of the birth.

Some of the important considerations in baby astrology are Gandant/ Moola, Yamal birth, Trik Birth/ Trikhal Dosha, birth with the teeth, same nakshatra as parents, sankranti birth, birth during eclipse (Grahan), amavasya birth, krishna chaturdasi birth etc. Recently I talked about the natal and neonatal teeth in a recent article. In this article, the first topic that I want to take is Gandant or Gandmoola.

Gand means inauspicious in Sanskrit. Certain part of nakshatra, lagna and tithi are called Gandant. Mathematically speaking, Gandant is nothing but a sandhi (junction point). Three sandhi areas are considered here – combined position of Sun and Moon (Tithi), Moon alone (Rashi and Nakshatra) and Lagna. Generally Sandhi areas are considered inauspicious in Vedic astrology. It is how Gandant is defined -

* The last 2 Ghatikas (48 minutes) of Purna Tithi (5th, 10th, 15th) and the first 2 Ghatikas (48 minutes) of Nanda Tithi (1st, 6th, 11th) are known as Tithi Gandanta.

* Similarly the last two Ghatikas (48 minutes) of Revati and first two Ghatikas (48 minutes) of Ashvini, the last two Ghatikas (48 minutes) of Aslesha and first two Ghatikas (48 minutes) of Magha and the last two Ghatikas (48 minutes) of Jyeshtha and first two Ghatikas of Mula are known as Nakshatr Gandanta.

* The last half Ghatika (12 minutes) of Meena and first half Ghatika (12 minutes) of Mesh, the last half Ghatika (12 minutes) of Kark and first half Ghatika (12 minutes) of Simh, the last half Ghatika (12 minutes) of Vrischik and first half Ghatika (12 minutes) of Dhanu are known as Lagn Gandanta.

Tithi, Nakshatra aand Lagna calculation can be found in various astrology software. You can use our free online astrology software www.astrosage.com for this purpose.

It is said in Saravali that the baby born during Gandant doesn’t live. If fortunately she lives, it will be inauspicious for the mother but the native will be rich and fortunate.

In my opinion the birth chart of the baby should be analyzed in totality on Vedic astrology principles and we should perform any remedy only if we find problems after analyzing overall birth chart. Gandant and other doshas can be one of the considerations but should not be the only consideration. If an astrologer doesn’t see any defect in the birth chart from the health and age perspective, there is no need to fear of anything. For a baby, health is for utmost importance and it is what an astrologer should analyze thoroughly after the birth. In fact, all Vedic astrology books talk about balarishta in detail.

I am not aware of any research done in the area of above doshas like Gandant, so I must say that we don’t have enough information to accept or reject it. Generally, there are lots of points made in classical astrology texts and most of these cannot be taken literarily and I believe the same for Gandant and other above mentioned doshas. I also sometimes suspect the authenticity of classical texts as all our classical texts are known to be modified over a period of time. For example take ‘Brihat Parasha Hora Shastra’ the most exhaustive and referred about text in Vedic astrology. Graha Shanti prakaran has been dealt in the end of the book and that gives me some reason to think that it has been added on later by pundits. Though I am not a historian and I’ll leave authenticity of these texts as a topic of research for them only, but I want to suggest reader of my blog not to be scared of these doshas. In case you believe in remedies, you can perform those just to get mental peace.

Remedies for Gandant
Parashar Hora talks in detail about remedies for Gandant. I am attaching this file which give you the detailed procedure for the remedies for Gandant dosha.

Hindu Baby Names Table for Rashi and Nakshatra

In India, babies are generally named on Nakshatra and Charan. There are total 27 Nakshatra (constellations) and each Nakshatra contains 4 padas or charanas. This is a table from which you can select the namakshar (first character of the name). For example, the baby birth happened in 4th charan of Chitra nakshatra, so you have to select fourth character in the last column in front of Chitra row. The table suggests that the name should begin with 'Re' (री) alphbet of Devanagri (Hindu/ Sanskrit) Varnamala. You can find nakshatra and charan using any vedic astrology software. http://www.astrosage.com/ is a free software and you can use that as well.

How to find profession of a person astrologically?

In this article I want to talk about various methods available in astrology for predicting profession of a person. This article will give summary of the some of the popular methods available as well as my view on vocation astrology. Please note that the methods mentioned here is no way exhaustive as there are hundreds or may be thousands of different methods available in astrology.

Popular view is that the 10th is the house of profession and the planet influencing 10th house gives the idea of the nature of the profession. If there is no planet in 10th house and also 10th house is not aspected by any planet, Parashar, Kalyan Varma and Varahamihira as suggested that the sign occupied by the lord of 10th house in Navamsa gives indication to the nature of profession. This is among the popular classical views.

J.N.Bhasin and several other Vedic astrologers give importance to 1st house more than 10th house for ascertaining profession.

Dr. B. V. Raman in his “How to Judge a Horoscope” says that “the lordship, aspects, location and the general strength of a planet capable of influencing the 10th house determine the nature of the results of the planet produce in its dasa.” In most of his examples, he has used 10th house only that too from the birth chart for determining the nature or profession.

Brihad Yavana Jataka suggests the sign in 2nd house, 4th house and 11th house gives the clue of the profession. Brihad Yavana Jataka talks signification of each sign in above houses in detail.

Saravali and Jatak Bharanam gives more important to house number 2, 11 and the Kendra houses – 1, 4, 7 & 10.

We must note that generally in Vedic astrology, a house needs to be judged from ascendant or Moon whichever is powerful. Mantreshwara suggests taking 10th house from the most powerful of ascendant, Sun and Moon. Though Bhattotapala suggested using all three charts i.e. Lagna, Sun and Moon and then combining the results for conclusion. This view of Bhattotapala is also supported by Garga.

Some astrologers also suggested judging 10th house in Navamsa chart the same way we judge the 10th house in birth chart. I don’t agree to this view as it goes against my understanding of the varga judgment rules.

Some classical texts suggest using Karakamsa the same way as Lagna chart, and hence some astrologers consider 10th house from Karakamsa as well.

Sephariel, one of the most popular western astrologers, has given importance to planet in angles and the planets aspecting the Sun and the Moon. Of course, when he is talking about aspects, he means western aspects and not the Vedic aspects.

Some astrologers also pay special attentions to the yogas for judging the profession. For example, presence of Rajyoga in a chart gives a clue of authority and higher position.

In some Marathi editions of Parasari Hora Sastra predictions about profession in respect of each Shasti Amsa of Janma Lagna are made. There is a table which gives possible profession for each Shasti Amsa (1/60 of a sign). This is a ready reckoner but my success rate with this table is not very high. I believe that this table needs to be rewritten keeping modern professions in mind.

K. Subramaniam, son of KS Krishnamurti, suggested judging 2nd, 6th and 10th house. He also suggested studying rasi, nakshatra and sub lords of the 10th cusp. A table having professions related to 249 subs can be found in various KP texts. This table, though gives some idea of professions related to a group of planet, cannot be used as a ready reckoner.

SP Khullar, astrologer who popularized “Cuspal Interlink” system, suggests examining 1st, 10th and 11th houses for profession. Though while examining, his emphasis is more on the house linked to above mentioned houses and not the permanent (naisargaika) nature of planets and signs.

My experience
Classical text suggests various methods, but I didn’t find any systematic approach for identifying the nature of profession. There are so many rules and almost none of them work uniformly. Based on my own experience I have found following methods work well –

Method 1.
One important observation that I have made is that the Dasamsa lagna lord gives very good clue of the nature of profession. In the Dasamsa chart, check the planet influencing lagna and lagna lord and it will give you very good indication of the nature of the profession.

Method 2.
In KP System, I check the 2nd, 6th and 11th house. This is similar to K Subramaniam’s method, though in place of 10th house, I found that 11th house gives better results. I use cuspal positions only if there are no planets in the above said houses. For example, if there are not planets in the second house, I use rasi, nakshatra and sub lord of 2nd cusp and so on.

I generally mix above to methods and got satisfactory results. We must note though that knowing the planets, signs and houses that will influence profession is not sufficient enough for predicting profession. These all needs to be combined to come up with the conclusion. The above method can give you some indications of the profession but still predicting profession precisely is going to be a difficult task for an astrologer.

If you have any question to above methodology, please feel free to leave a comment with your email id and I’ll try to answer your question.

Ganesh Chaturthi/ Vinayak Chaturthi

4th day of Bhadrapad month in Hindu calendar is known as Ganesha Chaturthi. Though the vrat for lord Ganesha is observed on 4th day of Krishna Paksha of every Hindu month, but this is special of all. Ganesha Chaturthi or Ganesha Festival is a day on which Lord Ganesha, the son of Shiva and Parvati, is believed to bestow his presence on earth for all his devotees and hence celebrated as the birthday of Lord Ganesha. It is also known as Vinayaka Chaturthi or Vinayaka Chavithi. Siddhi Vinayak Vrat is also observed on this same day. While celebrated all over India, it is most elaborate in Maharashtra,Goa ( Biggest festival for Konkani people all over the world ) Gujarat, Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh, and other areas which were former states of the Maratha Empire. In this year 2009, this festival will be celebrated on 23rd of August.

Swami Sivananda has talked about the religious and spiritual practices that should be performed this day. Please have a look here.
